Group History

The history of Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG (SMAG) goes back to 1919, when the engineer Anton Raky, a pioneer in modern drilling technology and oil drilling, founded the company Anton Raky, Tiefbohrungen in Salzgitter.

The cornerstone for SMAG was laid in 1937 when the drilling rig manufacturer was purchased by the Salzgitter Group. The company purchased the grab product division from PEINER AG in 1986, and developed PEINER into an international brand in the years that followed. Currently, SMAG, together with its subsidiaries, is the world market leader in the manufacture of grabs used in global cargo handling, waste disposal and agriculture. Other product divisions manufacture mining equipment, special-purpose vehicles, control cabins and driver´s cabs as well as mobile antenna masts.
