Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG (SMAG) is the holding company of a German group of mechanical engineering companies with factories in Germany, China, India and Slovakia where grabs for loading and unloading seagoing cargo vessels, completely equipped driver cabins, automated drilling technology for the open-pit and underground mining industry, special-purpose vehicles for the process industry as well as mechanical and hydraulic telescopic antenna masts are developed and manufactured.


SMAG was founded in 1919 and privatised in 1941, the company has been an independent public company since 2008. Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG (SMAG) leads the world in manufacturing grabs for international seagoing cargo handling. Based in Salzgitter, Germany, the special-purpose machinery manufacturer develops, manufactures and services lifting equipment specifically designed for loading and unloading bulk cargo such as sand, gravel, coal, or waste, wood and agricultural commodities. Operating under the worldwide known brand name PEINER, SMAG sells motor, hydraulic and rope grabs and slewing units as well as spreaders for container lifting.




  • 1919  Foundation of “Anton Raky, Unternehmung für Tiefbohrungen” in Salzgitter-Bad; this was the origin of the Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG core activity

  • 1923  Conversion into “Bergbau AG Salzgitter”

  • 1934  Reestablishment of operations under the name “Bergbau AG”

  • 1941  Change of name to “Aktiengesellschaft für Bergbau und Hüttenbedarf” (German stock corporation for mining and steel mill equipment)

  • 1951  Conversion into “Salzgitter Maschinen Aktiengesellschaft (SMG)”

  • 1977  Fusion of SMG and “Stahlbau AG”, conversion into “Salzgitter Maschinen und Anlagen AG”

  • 1986  Acquisition of grab technology and tower construction division from PEINER AG

  • 1987  Transformation from “Salzgitter Maschinen und Anlagen AG” to the limited liability company “Salzgitter Maschinenbau GmbH” with Salzgitter Hüttenwerke AG and Salzgitter AG as shareholders (Salzgitter AG and Preussag AG merged in 1989)

  • 1991  Acquisition of the company by ETN-Maschinenbau GmbH; operations continued under the company name “Salzgitter Maschinenbau GmbH”

  • 1994  Acquisition of Matec GmbH by the principal shareholder.

  • 1995  Foundation of the SHANGHAI PEINER & SMAG MACHINERY CO., Ltd Joint Venture in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China.

  • 2006  Foundation of SMAG PEINER GRABS (INDIA) PRIVATE Ltd.

  • 2008  Transformation from SMAG GmbH into “Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG”

  • 2011  Acquisition of majority share in HERBST Förder- und Hebetechnik GmbH, Braunschweig.

  • 2013  Foundation of PEINER SMAG Machinery (India) Ltd., Chennai, and start of establishment of a factory in India.
  • 2013  Takeover of the drilling rigs business from Nordmeyer group, Peiner.
